Collisions between vessels and whales are increasingly recognized as a preventable threat to both marine life and maritime safety. As global shipping traffic expands, critical whale habitats, especially migration and feeding corridors, have become high-risk zones for accidental strikes. Every year it is estimated that thousands of whales are injured or killed by vessel strikes.

The OCEAN Project (Operator-Centered Enhancement of Awareness in Navigation), a three-year European Union and United Kingdom initiative, is addressing this challenge head-on by integrating advanced hydroacoustic technology and artificial intelligence as one solution to help ships detect and avoid whales in near-real time.

Redwing Glider Launches Historic Global Ocean Expedition

On October 11, 2025, Redwing—a next-generation Slocum Sentinel Glider—was launched into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Massachusetts. Guided by the rhythms of the sea and the promise of discovery, Redwing will collect ocean data, dodge fishing nets, and surf powerful currents, all without a human onboard. Its journey will span the Gulf Stream to Europe, south to Gran Canaria, onward to Cape Town, across the Indian Ocean to Australia and New Zealand, through the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and eventually back to the Atlantic via the Falkland Islands, Brazil, and the Caribbean.

The mission aims to revolutionize ocean data collection, improve weather forecasting and our understanding of the causes of extreme weather events, and inspire the next generation of ocean scientists and engineers.

Loch Lyr serves as the centrepiece of DEEP Campus, a cutting-edge facility developed by the visionary company DEEP, whose mission is to “make humans aquatic.”

Spanning 50 acres, this former National Dive Center offers an unparalleled environment for testing subsea equipment, developing methodologies, and training personnel in controlled conditions. The loch itself stretches 500 meters in length, up to 125 meters in width, and plunges to an impressive 80 meters of depth. Its water quality is pristine, maintained by innovative measures such as perimeter curtains designed to limit debris from entering.

Installing an Offshore wind turbine is a complex, multi-phase process that requires extensive planning, precise engineering, and continuous monitoring.

Tracker Ensures Clean data and Efficient Mapping

See how the SeaBat T-Series tracker option can instantly improve your survey data. In this example, the outer beams are too weak (marked with blue), resulting in noisy data. The range is too long, leading to low ping rates. With Tracker enabled, the appropriate range settings are automatically identified. We also observe that the beams provide a stronger seabed response (marked with green), reducing the risk of false detections. Finally, you'll notice the swath angle opens up. Here Tracker detects that more data is available, producing a larger swath and ultimately saving ship time.

Tracker Automatically Adjusts Short Range Settings

This is a classic case where the range is set too short, causing the outer beams to be out of range of the seabed. The result is noisy data, extensive data cleaning, reduced coverage, and lost ship time. This scenario can easily occur when the depth changes without the operator noticing. With the SeaBat T-Series Tracker option enabled, less monitoring is needed as it will ensure the range is adjusted correctly whenever the depth changes.

Tracker Rescues Poor Data and Swath Coverage

This example first demonstrates poor data quality. Not only is there significant noise due to poor detections, but there are also data gaps (Holidays) leading to reduced swath coverage. Ultimately, this results in extensive manual cleaning, tighter line spacing, and repeated survey runs. In all cases, users spend more time on their surveys to get it right. The cause of these poor data is inadequate sonar settings. This often occurs with inexperienced users, or users unable to continuously monitor sonar settings, or in uncrewed operations where uninterrupted focus on sonar settings is challenging. Once the user enables the SeaBat T-Series tracker option, the settings are automatically adjusted within a few pings, allowing clean data to be recorded at the maximum possible swath width.

Adaptive Gates Follow Complex Seabed Terrain

Gates aid in bottom detection by minimizing false detections. Any gate can follow a flat seabed, but the SeaBat T-Series comes with unique adaptive gates. As seen in this example, the gates follow both flat terrain and steep cliffs. This is one of the ways the SeaBat T-Series produces the best data and the widest swaths.

Normalized Backscatter Maintains Data Integrity

In this example, you will observe that while the user adjusts sonar settings such as power gain, absorption, and spreading, the backscatter remains unaffected. The SeaBat T-Series sonar accurately measures the seabed response because the normalized backscatter is adjusted to account for these sonar settings. Normalized backscatter allows users to adjust sonar settings without compromising the quality or integrity of backscatter data. This flexibility in data collection ensures that changes in parameters such as gains do not influence the measurement of backscatter strength, ultimately facilitating more accurate analysis and interpretation of underwater features.

Tracker Prevents Oversaturation in Backscatter Data

In the SeaBat T-Series sonar wedge, the beams are now color-coded by intensity. Red/orange beams indicate that the signal is reaching saturation levels, which should be avoided as it leads to poor backscatter. Once the SeaBat T-Series Tracker option is enabled, the settings are adjusted almost instantly to match the seabed response. You will notice that the beams turn green, indicating an adequate response level. Some outer beams are blue, showing that the signal is too weak. Subsequently, Tracker will adjust those so that the beams are just right. SeaBat T-Series Tracker ensures that good backscatter data is collected by avoiding weak or oversaturated beams.

Tracker Optimizes Swath Width for Maximum Efficiency

Here, the T-Series SeaBat tracker option controls the swath width, which was initially set very narrow. Tracker determines that a larger swath is possible and begins to open up the swath angle. Surveying the wreck of the HMS Hood (1891)

See how Teledyne Marine surveyed the wreck of HMS Hood with the Teledyne RESON SeaBat T51 800 kilo hertz multibeam echosounder.

In August 2023, Teledyne Marine set out to survey the wreck of HMS Hood (1891). The purpose of the survey was to document the status of the wreck with the latest in high resolution sonar technology.

The wreck is located at the entrance of Portland Harbour, Dorset, UK. HMS Hood was built in 1891 with an impressive length of 125 meters. In 1914, after 20 years of service, she was deliberately sunk to act as a “blockship,” to stop U-boats or torpedoes from entering the port.

Still faithfully resting at the harbour entry, the wreck of HMS Hood, once a popular dive spot, is deteriorating with age and it is understood, no longer safe to dive on.

By using the Teledyne RESON SeaBat T51 800 kilo hertz multibeam echosounder with the full swath and the smallest available receiver beamwidth, Teledyne Marine determined the status of the ship – delivering detailed, and accurate images of this largely forgotten piece of local naval history.

Oceanology International 2024 was a major success for the Teledyne Marine team. More than 8,000 attendees visited the show at ExCel London, where over 500 exhibitors from diverse sectors were present. Teledyne Marine had a prominent display at the trade show, featuring bold graphics, two meeting rooms, and a relaxing coffee bar. Anti-Submarine Warfare

The Slocum glider is a uniquely mobile network component capable of moving to specific locations and depths and occupying controlled spatial and temporal grids. Driven in a sawtooth vertical profile by variable buoyancy, the glider moves both horizontally and vertically.

The long-range and duration capabilities of Slocum gliders make them ideally suited for subsurface sampling at the regional scale. Carrying a wide variety of sensors, they can be programmed to patrol for weeks at a time, surfacing to transmit their data to shore while downloading new instructions at regular intervals, realizing a substantial cost savings compared to traditional surface ships.

This video takes you on a Anti-Submarine Warfare ( ASW) starting with a Rapid Environmental Assessment mission with the Slocum glider, from deployment of the glider to collect data. Follow the glider as it surface and sends the data to the Maritime Operations Center (MOC)via satellite.

At the MOC data is analyzed and relevant is sent to a ship located nearby to hunt for submarine threat.

The main ASW operation using towed sonar array to survey area of interest can now place. An array cable is launched and after a few seconds a weak sound signal travels through the water column to the towed array receiver. As the sound signal is received by the array, a data display pops up onscreen revealing anomalies in the sonar trace.

The new SeaBat 7123-MkII is an advanced dual-use high resolution sonar suitable for both commercial and military applications.

Commercial uses include super high resolution imaging for underwater inspection related tasks, long range detection of object in the water column and the sonar can be used as a platform for scientific and oceanographic research applications.

Naval uses include the use of the sonar as a component in Mine Countermeasure (MCM) systems for detection of Mine Like Objects (MLOs) and the SeaBat 7123-MkII is potentially suitable for retrofit or upgrade of existing mine hunting platforms. The SeaBat 7123-MkII can maximize platform safety by increasing the stand-off range.
